The Danish language, which is the official language of Denmark and is spoken by around 5 - 6 million people (in and around Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, Faroe Islands, as well as other communities), developed during the Middle Ages from Old Norse (a common predecessor of Swedish and Danish). Danish is a North Germanic language that evolved from Old Norse, which was spoken by the Scandinavian peoples during the Viking Age. It developed in Denmark, alongside its close relatives Swedish and Norwegian, and traces its origins to Proto-Norse, the language of the early Scandinavian tribes. Over time, Old Danish began to distinguish itself from Old Swedish and Old Norwegian, particularly after the Viking Age, with the establishment of the Danish kingdom and the gradual spread of Christianity, which brought Latin and other foreign influences into the language. By the 16th century, Danish had evolved into Early Modern Danish, with significant changes in phonology, grammar, and vocabulary.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Danish underwent further changes as the country became more centralized and modernized. The language's written form was standardized in the 18th and 19th centuries, with major works like the Danish grammar by Rasmus Rask and the spelling reform of 1872, which aligned the written language more closely with its pronunciation. Danish has remained the official language of Denmark and has influenced and been influenced by neighboring languages, particularly German, English, and Scandinavian languages. Today, Danish is spoken by approximately 5 - 6 million people, primarily in Denmark and Greenland, and has developed a distinctive sound and vocabulary that sets it apart from other Scandinavian languages, even though they share a common historical origin.

The language is a member of the East Scandinavian branch of the North Germanic languages. The oldest Danish records re runic inscriptions (CE 250 - 800). The oldest Danish manuscripts date from around the 13th century. â€‹

Danish, like many other Potter translations, have multiple editions. The first edition books feature unique cover art by Per Jørgensen and the first 3 books can be found with pre-movie font; the first print is softcover and looks similar to the pre-movie Book Club Edition. The books have been published by Gyldendal and were translated by Hanna Lützen. As mentioned, there are also Book Club Editions, with most featuring different cover art from the trade books. Being really honest, I don't care for the hardcover set immediately below and do not plan to collect/buy this edition; however, if you have the missing 3 books and would like them added here, please let me know.

As mentioned above, there are Danish book club Editions as well; some feature different art from the trade edition, others have the same art. Book clubs can be told from the trade editions because the book clubs say "Gyldendas Bogklubber". Also the trade edition hardcover books have a matte finish (see above), while the hardcover book club editions are a lot more glossy.

While sharing the same cover art the trade edition, the tell tale "Gyldendals Bogklubber" is on the front cover's right edge in small letters; also the cover is glossy.

The Jonny Duddle art, first appearing on the Bloomsbury UK 2014 editions, has become fairly common around the world - with the art being found on many Potter translations, including Danish.

Many thanks to Terrell for supplying pictures/information for book 2 - 6; I haven't completed this set yet.

One of my favorite sets from all over the world is this one right here - this softcover set is fantastic. All 7 books were released in 7 lovely colors. The side edges are also sprayed a deep black, which was not common until 2024 when many other publishers, the US publisher Scholastic included, have started doing this as way to dress up their books.

This set is out of print. It does show on US e-commerce sites, however, the books aren't super cheap (anywhere from around $60+ per book from what I've seen); however, I have seen this set for sale on many local danish sites - the only problem then is finding someone who wants to ship to me, here in the States.

This Danish box set was published in 2008. The books and cover art are quite elegant. This box set is not mine and the photos were taken and shared with me; I would like to own this set at some point - it is lovely.

Other softcover editions of the books are available as well in unique to Denmark cover art.

All published in 2004, only the 1st 4 books are available in these covers, by Harvey Macaulay/ Empire.

The Danish publisher also made an edition with the Brian Selznick cover art. I'm only aware of a softcover edition at this time; if you know of a hardcover Danish edition w cover art, please let me know.

The Danish books are also available in the Jim Kay illustrated edition and the MinaLima interactive edition.

The Danish 25th Anniversary set was published in 2023 by Gyldendal as well. As far as we are aware, the text blocks are the same as the 1st edition trades w/ exception of a minor edits throughout the series.

While I don't really care for the 1st edition Danish cover art by Per Jøgensen, I do really enjoy how beautifully done that art was incorporated into this box set. The individual books (at least in the set) do not have individual ISBNs, so I am not sure if there offered for sale apart from this lovely box set.
